Chief Technology Officer

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), Inc. is a U.S. incorporated 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit research and education institution employing a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people.  Activities include oceanographic and marine biological research from marine pollution to remote sensing.  Additional information on BIOS can be found on the World-Wide-Web at http://www.bios.edu/.

BIOS is taking application for the position of Chief Technology Officer.  The position requires a hands-on individual with on-call availability to work some off-hours, weekend and public holiday work.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Performs all management administrative duties (approval, budgets, controls, etc.)
2. Maintains relationships with outside consultants and vendors
3. Oversees all BIOS MIS services and WAN communications
4. Monitors and manages LAN security
5. Develops and administers computer systems policy and strategic planning
6. Consults on all purchases and acquisitions of technology investments for both administrative and scientific departments
7. Manages and oversees all Office of Information Technology personnel (Help Desk, Repair shop, Network Services, Security).
8. Supervises and delegates all IT projects to staff or hired 3rd parties
9. Maintains ‘core’ protocol network services

Qualifications and Requirements:
1. A minimum of ten years of recent relevant experience is essential
2. Extensive department management experience (budget development and management)
3. Four year university degree in computer science or related discipline
4. Experience working in a research or educational institution
5. Advanced skills in UNIX, Linux, Macintosh and Windows system administration along with specific experience in TCP/IP, domain name system, network information system and email protocols.  The applicant should also have experience with running a helpdesk, hardware maintenance, networking and security
6. Solid understanding and experience with physical networking, switches, routers and cabling
7. Candidate must have MCSE, CCNA, and CISSP certifications or equivalent
8. Excellent oral, written and personal communication skills
9. Strong project management experience
